Why I Still Believe in HR (even when it sucks sometimes)

There are days when I stare at my inbox—overflowing with drama, compliance chaos, and 47 variations of “Can I talk to you for a minute?”—and think, Why did I choose this?

And then there are moments, quieter ones, where I remember exactly why.

Let’s be real: HR isn’t glamorous. It’s not all DEI campaigns and team-building retreats. Sometimes it’s layoffs and investigations. Sometimes it’s being the “bad guy” just because you followed policy. Sometimes it’s watching leadership ask for “strategic input” and then completely ignoring it.

Yeah. It sucks sometimes.

But I still believe in it.

I believe in HR because I’ve seen what it looks like when no one is advocating for the people behind the job titles. I’ve seen what happens when culture is treated like fluff and toxicity is allowed to fester because “he brings in money.”

I’ve had those behind-closed-doors conversations with employees who just needed someone to listen. Someone to say, “That’s not okay—and here’s what we can do.”

I’ve sat across from people who were leaving the company because they finally felt brave enough to do what was right for them—and thanked me for making it less scary.

I’ve helped rewrite outdated policies that used to punish people for being human.

I’ve held space during grief, conflict, burnout, and moments where people didn’t even know what they needed—but they needed someone.

That’s the part no one claps for.

And that’s the part that matters most.

HR isn't just forms and laws and training modules. It’s holding the line when the right thing isn’t the easy thing. It’s making space for growth, accountability, and care—especially when those things aren’t trending.

Would it be easier to check out? To keep it surface-level and never dig into the mess?

Absolutely.

But that’s not who I am. And honestly? That’s not why I got into HR.

So yeah, it’s thankless sometimes. It’s messy. It's misunderstood.

But if I can make even one person’s work life a little more fair, a little more safe, a little more human—then it’s worth it.

And that’s why I still believe in HR.

If you’re in HR—or just HR-adjacent—and you’re feeling the burnout, the doubt, or even just the loneliness of it all… reach out. Message me, email me, text me. I’m your HRish friend who gets it. No corporate speak, no judgment—just real talk.

Let’s remind each other why we got into this in the first place.Let’s talk about what HR can be.
